James Kang, MD, chair of the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, was elected to the position of president-elect of the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery (ABOS) for a one-year term. He will become president in October 2023.
Kang, who is also the Thomas S. Thornhill, MD, and Karen N. Thornhill Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at Harvard Medical School, was elected to the ABOS Board of Directors in 2017 and previously served as chair of the ABOS Finance (Treasurer), Maintenance of Certification and Research committees.
An internationally recognized investigator in the field of intervertebral disc degeneration, Kang has conducted pioneering research to understand the biology and molecular mechanisms of disc degeneration, as well as to devise novel therapeutic interventions using stem cells and gene therapy. In addition to his basic science research, he has published numerous clinical research studies on spinal surgeries and their outcomes. Additionally, Kang is a devoted clinician and has an active practice of spinal surgery. His clinical interest is in treating patients with spinal stenosis.
The American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery was founded in 1934 as a private, voluntary, nonprofit, independent organization to serve the best interests of the public and the medical profession. These interests are achieved through the ABOS by establishing standards for the education of orthopaedic surgeons. These standards are evaluated by the ABOS through board certification examinations and practice evaluations.
