Mukherjee Wins ACP Weinberger Award for Physician Executives/Leaders

Joia S. Mukherjee, MD, MPH, of the Division of Global Health Equity, received the Steven E. Weinberger Award for Physician Executives/Leaders from the American College of Physicians (ACP) in recognition of her commitment to delivering, educating about and advocating for global health equity.

Named in honor of Steven E. Weinberger, MD, FACP, the ACP’s executive vice president and former senior vice president for Medical Education and Publishing, this award recognizes a physician executive or leader of a national or international medical organization for distinguished contributions to internal medicine or work significantly improving healthcare and/or medical education beyond a single institution or health system.

In addition to her role at the Brigham, Mukherjee is chief medical officer of Partners In Health (PIH). Her work and research are largely focused on infectious diseases, health systems and social justice. Over the course of her career, she has specialized in studying and treating HIV, tuberculosis and Ebola, and she leads the PIH team in supporting countries and localities in combatting COVID-19. Alongside PIH colleagues, Mukherjee provides preventive and curative health care, as well as comprehensive social programs in Haiti, Kazakhstan, Lesotho, Liberia, Malawi, Mexico, the Navajo Nation, Peru, Russia, Rwanda and Sierra Leone. In addition to this work with PIH, Mukherjee advises and serves as a member of many grassroots medical organizations and shares her expertise with the World Health Organization and other international agencies on human resources for health, strengthening health systems and treatment for HIV, hepatitis C, drug-resistant tuberculosis and COVID-19.
