Hirji Earns ERAS Cardiac Society's Engelman Cardiac Enhanced Recovery Fellowship

Sameer A. Hirji, MD, MPH

Sameer A. Hirji, MD, MPH, of the Division of Thoracic and Cardiac Surgery, received the inaugural Richard Engelman Cardiac Enhanced Recovery Fellowship Award from the Society for Enhanced Recovery After Cardiac Surgery (ERAS Cardiac). This award affords the recipient the opportunity to join the ERAS Cardiac Executive Board in focused research, collaboration and presentations at academic meetings.

Named for Richard Engelman, MD — a thoracic surgeon, chief of Cardiac Surgical Research at Baystate Medical Center and a member of the ERAS Cardiac Advisory Board — this fellowship provides outstanding trainees with an enriched experience and advanced training in perioperative care of cardiac surgical patients.

Hirji is a cardiac surgery resident in the joint Cardiothoracic and General Surgery Program at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Harvard Medical School. He has over 220 peer-reviewed manuscripts and book chapters, with a focus on surgical and transcatheter aortic valve therapies and standardizing cardiac clinical outcomes, as well as identifying new avenues for research in the context of enhanced recovery after cardiac surgery.

ERAS Cardiac’s mission is to optimize perioperative care of cardiac surgical patients through collaborative discovery, analysis, expert consensus and dissemination of best practices.
