Rathmell Selected as Editor-in-Chief of ASA's Anesthesiology

James P. Rathmell, MD, MBA, chair of the Department of Anesthesiology, Perioperative and Pain Medicine at the Brigham and chief of Enterprise Anesthesiology for Mass General Brigham, was named editor-in-chief for Anesthesiology, the peer-reviewed medical journal of the American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA). Rathmell was selected from a global pool of applicants by ASA’s ad hoc Committee on Editor-in-Chief Search.  

Rathmell served as an executive editor of Anesthesiology from 2012 to 2021, as creative and multimedia editor since 2021 and interim co-editor-in-chief for the past seven months. He will start his new position on Jan. 1, 2024.  

In addition to his role at the Brigham, Rathmell is a professor of Anaesthesia at Harvard Medical School and has published extensively. His research includes a mixture of investigator-initiated and industry-sponsored trials examining the effectiveness of new and emerging treatments for pain.
