The Massachusetts Nurses Association (MNA) work stoppage is impacting Brigham and Women's Hospital. The hospital is open and we will continue to ensure high-quality, safe patient care for the five-day work stoppage. You may notice heavier traffic near the main campus due to picketing, so please consider allowing extra time when traveling to and from appointments. Learn more

Essence of Nursing Award

The Gitta and Saul Kurlat Essence of Nursing Award is the highest honor presented annually to a Brigham and Women’s Hospital clinical nurse or nurse-in-charge whose practice reflects the BWH Nursing Professional Practice Model.

The award is supported through the generosity of the late Mr. Saul Kurlat, a grateful patient of Brigham and Women’s Hospital, in honor of the compassionate care that Brigham nurses provided to his late wife, Gitta.
Each year, we publicly acknowledge the many accomplishments of four nurse honorees and the Essence of Nursing recipient.

Monica Aurilio, BSN, RN, CNRN, is the recipient of the 2023 Essence of Nursing Award. For more information, read the May 2023 issue of Heart & Science.
