Joint Repair

VIEW MORE INFO

Joint repair includes a variety of surgical procedures to repair damaged or worn out joints. Joint repair may be an option for patients such as those with early arthritis whose joints have not become so severely damaged that they require joint replacement surgery. Procedures to repair shoulder, knee and hip joints can often help delay or avoid replacement surgery. Joint repair procedures are usually done through minimally invasive arthroscopic techniques that can be performed on an outpatient basis.

BWH offers world-class orthopaedic surgical care, including joint repair.

The Brigham and Women's Hospital (BWH) Department of Orthopaedic Surgery is a long-time leader in joint care. Our innovative and high-quality diagnosis and treatment led US News & World Report to recognize our orthopaedics program as one of the country's best. Our staff continually strives to raise the standards of care for joint care, including repair and replacement surgery, by advancing the development of innovative surgical protocols and designing improved joint implants.

Among the many joint repair services offered at BWH are the following:

  • Shoulder procedures: rotator cuff and labrum repair, shoulder separation and instability repair, and tendon transfers
  • Knee procedures: ACL reconstruction, repair of ligaments and tendons, and cartilage repair
  • Hip procedures: hip arthroscopy and hip resurfacing to repair a variety of hip conditions

Our comprehensive orthopaedic program at BWH also provides treatment such as total hip, knee, elbow and shoulder replacement; cartilage repair ; microvascular hand and upper extremity surgery; foot and ankle surgery; podiatry; orthopaedic trauma; spine surgery, treatment of bone and soft tissue sarcomas; and sports medicine, including acute sports injuries and rehabilitation. Our Cartilage Repair Center (CRC) at BWH is world-renown as a leading institution for the treatment of cartilage damage and early arthritis in the knee and other joints. In addition to treatments to repair cartilage, the Center also performs osteotomy procedures (a treatment for osteoarthritis in which a joint bone is reshaped), surgery to repair joints, and ligament reconstruction.
