Knee Replacement

Knee replacement, also called total knee arthroplasty, is surgery that replaces a worn out or damaged knee with an artificial part (prosthesis). Knee joint replacement surgery is most commonly recommended for patients who have developed severe knee damage over time due to osteoarthritis or rheumatoid arthritis. It may also be needed by patients who have had fractures, torn cartilage, and/or torn ligaments that have lead to irreversible damage to the knee. Replacing damaged knee joints can reduce pain and restore mobility, enabling patients to resume productive lives.

BWH: a leading provider of knee replacement services.

Brigham and Women's Hospital (BWH) is a leading provider of partial and total knee joint replacement services. Every year, our orthopaedic surgeons help improve the quality of life of nearly 1,500 patients suffering from severe knee damage by delivering expert knee replacement surgery. Specialists in our Orthopaedic & Arthritis Center will often begin treatment with alternative medical interventions, including joint repair techniques such as minimally invasive knee arthroscopy, to try to alleviate knee pain without replacing the joint. If these options prove to be unsuccessful, the next step may be to consider knee replacement, depending on the patient's age, weight, and quality of life goals.

Knee arthroplasty services offered at BWH include:

  • Partial (unicompartmental) knee replacement surgery: replaces a damaged portion (compartment) of the knee but leaves healthy areas intact
  • Total knee replacement surgery: replaces bone and cartilage from all sections of the knee, including the medial, lateral, and patellofemoral (kneecap)
  • Minimally invasive knee replacement surgery: an innovative procedure that is equally as effective as open surgery but uses smaller incisions to reduce blood loss, pain, trauma and tissue damage
