The Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) Program is composed of nationally known physicians from a variety of disciplines, all specializing in the treatment of movement and psychiatric disorders. Our integrated approach helps to ensure seamless patient care. The DBS team includes movement disorder neurologists, neurosurgeons, psychiatrists, neuropsychologists, and administrative staff. We encourage referring physicians to contact us to discuss their patients, or to refer them for consultation.

Michael Hayes, MD
Neurology - Movement Disorders
Michael Hayes, MD, came to the Brigham and Women’s Hospital (BWH) to develop the DBS Program and to head the new Department of Neurology at South Shore Hospital as the Vice Chair of Community Neurology at BWH.
Allan H. Ropper, MD, is Professor of Neurology at Harvard Medical School and Raymond D. Adams Master Clinician and Executive Vice Chairman of the Department of Neurology at Brigham and Women’s Hospital.
G. Rees Cosgrove, MD, FRCSC, FACS is an internationally acclaimed stereotactic and functional neurosurgeon with over 30 years of experience in the surgical treatment of Parkinson’s disease, tremor, dystonia and other movement disorders.
Sarah Christie, PA-C is the PA (Physician Assistant) who works with Dr. Cosgrove in the management of DBS patients. She is responsible for working with Dr. Cosgrove in evaluating candidates for DBS, as well as during the perioperative period for surgical patients. Sarah is part of the team with Heather Galvin-Carter and Dr. Cosgrove and available to patient for questions or concerns.

David Silbersweig, MD, is one of the pioneers of functional neuroimaging research in psychiatry.
Heather Galvin-Carter is the DBS Program Coordinator. She is responsible for managing program operations such as, but not limited to, coordination of patient appointments, surgical scheduling, event management, patient accommodations, and insurance approvals. Heather is our team’s first contact for new patients, referring physicians, and speaking requests.
