What to Expect from Nutrition Counseling

Before your visit

First, determine if your health insurance covers nutrition counseling with a registered dietitian. This may be called "Medical Nutrition Therapy." For insurance information, please click here. Next, schedule your first visit by contacting us. Be ready to tell us what location you would like to go to, why you would like to see a dietitian and your Brigham and Women’s blue card number. You will be matched with the appropriate dietitian at the best time for you. Note: If you have not been seen at BWH in 6 months, call 866-489-4056 to ensure that your registration information is up-to-date.

To help the dietitian get a clear picture of what you’re eating, please fill out a 3-Day Food Log with the time you eat and the type and amount of food eaten. If you are using tube feeding or IV nutrition (also called total parenteral nutrition or TPN), please bring information about the type and amount of formula you use or the TPN order.

We ask you come 10-15 minutes prior to your appointment. Also, bring your health insurance card. You may require a co-pay and will need to pay before the appointment. Please cancel at least 24 hours in advance. Our no-show policy is here.

During your first visit:

Your first visit will last about 45 minutes. Our dietitians will listen to your concerns and get to know you. We will look at your 3-day food log, learn the foods you like and dislike, discuss your lifestyle, and start working on a nutrition plan that suits your needs. At the end of the session, the dietitian will schedule your follow-up appointment.

Follow-up appointments:

Follow-up appointments are about 30 minutes. At these, we will discuss your progress and together, continue to take steps toward achieving your goals. We will help you make small changes over time so that you maintain these changes and reach your goals. Follow-up appointments occur anywhere from 2 weeks to 6 months after your first visit.

After your visit:

You can use Patient Gateway to communicate any questions to your dietitian or to request an appointment. This will increase your chance for success and provide you with the best care possible.
