CPE Units Offered

We offer different CPE units throughout the year. Below is general information about each unit and whether or not applications are still being accepted for the upcoming unit.

Extended Unit (Academic Year): Level 1 and Level 2 CPE students are considered for this unit. The time commitment is fourteen hours a week, plus one on-call overnight shift a month. This unit comprises 400 hours of educational components and patient pastoral visiting.

  • Offered mid-September to the end of April

  • Tuition: $1000

Semester Based CPE (Fall Unit): Level 1 and Level 2 CPE students are considered for this unit. The time commitment is 25 hours a week, and 7 overnights or on-call shifts. This unit comprises 400 hours of educational components and patient pastoral visiting.

  • Program runs from September - December
  • Benefits include: Cafeteria Meal coupons, and other discounts

  • Tuition: $1000
  • Application Fee: $75

Intensive Unit (Summer): Level 1 and Level 2 CPE students are considered for this ten-week unit. The time commitment is forty hours a week, including seven on-call overnight shifts. This unit comprises 400 hours of educational components and patient pastoral visiting.

  • Offered from the end of May to the end of August

  • Tuition: $1000
  • Application Fee: $75

Residency Unit (Academic Year): Level 1 and Level 2 CPE students are considered for the residency. The residency program offers three CPE units over the academic year. This nine month program requires residents to do 36 hours a week, which includes one overnight on-call each week and class time. Residents are also eligible for benefit time and have breaks scheduled in between each unit.

Applicants must have completed one unit of CPE prior to applying for residency.

  • Offered from the beginning of September to mid May
  • CPE residents are BWH employees and are benefits eligible.
  • Tuition: $300 (per unit)
  • Application Fee: $75
  • Stipend: Approximately $19,000

Please note: Applicants for the CPE residency program are asked to fill out the same application as the CPE interns and are also asked to complete additional paperwork, please see CPE Residency Information.

Supervisory Education: The Supervisory Education program offers training for students preparing to become ACPE Supervisors. The program generally lasts from 3-4 years. One student at a time is accepted into this program. It is a full time, stipended program.

The Brigham and Women's Hospital CPE Center is Accredited for Level I, Level II and Supervisory Education by the Association for Clinical Pastoral Education, Inc.
