Ultrasound Referral and Scheduling Information for Patients and Families

To make an appointment for an ultrasound exam (also called sonogram), you need an order from your doctor. Mass General Brigham physicians will create the order in our electronic order-entry system and will schedule your appointment for the time and location you choose. Non-Mass General Brigham physicians will need to fax your order to us at (617) 264-5205. You can then call us at (617) 732-7284 to schedule your appointment. You can change your appointment by calling Radiology Scheduling at (617) 732-7284.

Pre-authorization for Ultrasound Exams

Pre-authorization for ultrasound exams is not required by most insurance companies. However, if you have questions regarding pre-authorization requirements, please call the customer service number on the back of your insurance card. If pre-authorization is required, this process will be initiated by the physician who ordered your ultrasound exam.

If you do not have insurance, the BWH Financial Counseling Office can assist you with the MassHealth/Medicaid application process. They can be reached at 617-732-7005 or toll-free at 1-866-736-1510.
