About the Department of Surgery

The Department of Surgery at Brigham and Women’s Hospital (BWH) is recognized around the world for setting standards for excellence in surgical patient care, as well as training the next generation of surgeons and spearheading ground-breaking research. We perform thousands of life-transforming surgical procedures each year and pioneer surgical techniques that improve quality of life for patients worldwide.

Our department, known for its collaborative approach, integrates the needs of the patient and family with the team of BWH specialists required for each treatment plan. We work as one dedicated team to provide the highest quality, most individually-focused care for our patients. Our highly regarded surgical sub-specialties—organized into 12 divisions—provide a full complement of surgical services at multiple locations throughout Eastern Massachusetts.

Welcome message from Gerard M. Doherty, MD, Surgeon-in-Chief, Brigham and Women's Hospital and Dana-Farber Cancer Institute.
