Poached Pears with Red Wine and Spices

Ingredients

  • ¾ cups water
  • ¼ cup dry red wine
  • 1 stick (3 inches) cinnamon
  • 1/8 tsp ground nutmeg
  • 1/8 tsp salt
  • 2 tsp honey
  • 3 thin slices of lemon
  • 4 ripe pears, halved lengthwise, peeled and cored

Preparation

  1. In a saucepan, combine water, wine, cinnamon, nutmeg, salt, honey, and lemon.
  2. Heat over medium low heat until mixture begins to boil.
  3. Add pears and cook, covered, over low heat for 10 to 15 minutes, or until the pears are tender.
  4. Cool and refrigerate for at least 2 hours to chill thoroughly.

Serves: 4
